Common S7 / U1 Bottom Plate Failure

The bottom of an upright vacuum is constantly exposed to carpet, hard flooring, thresholds, debris, and years of normal wear. On an older Miele S7 or Dynamic U1, the lower section can eventually wear significantly.

One problem we see is wear around the areas that support the small rear/support rollers or caster wheels. As the lower section deteriorates, the wheel mounting area may no longer securely retain the wheels.

In severe cases, a wheel can become loose or fall completely out of the vacuum.

Sharp or Worn Metal Underneath Your Miele?

Another indication that the lower section needs replacement is metal that has become extremely thin or developed a sharp edge.

Once the base has worn to this point, continued use is not recommended. A sharp or damaged underside can potentially snag carpet, scratch flooring, or cause additional damage to the vacuum.

Replacing the complete lower section is the proper repair rather than continuing to operate the vacuum with a badly worn base.

Loose or Missing Caster / Support Wheel?

If one of the small wheels underneath your Miele S7 or U1 has fallen out, inspect the lower section before simply replacing the wheel.

If the mounting area in the lower section is worn or damaged, installing another wheel may not provide a lasting repair because the new wheel may also become loose.

When the lower section can no longer properly retain the wheel, replacing the complete lower section is generally the better long-term repair.

At Lone Star Vacuum, when we see an S7 or U1 with a missing support wheel, we inspect the bottom plate carefully before replacing the wheel. If the metal or mounting area has worn enough to let the wheel fall out, replacing only the wheel may not solve the underlying problem.

Also run a visual inspection around the underside of the vacuum. If the metal has worn extremely thin or has developed a sharp edge, the lower section should be replaced.

While the vacuum is disassembled, this is also a good opportunity to inspect the brush roller, brush bearings, belt drive, suction channel, wheels, and surrounding lower powerhead components for wear or accumulated debris.
