Understanding Performance Specifications
Water Lift (H2O)
Water lift (H2O) measures the engine strength of the central vacuum — the power with which the air is moved. The speed at which the air moves is a good indicator of suction power. This shows whether the chosen unit can pick up larger, heavier debris. This factor is especially important when using an air-driven powerhead: the greater the suction strength, the faster the brush roller will spin! It is also essential for retractable hose systems, as this force enables the hose to retract smoothly into the piping system.
Airflow (CFM / CMH)
Airflow measures the volume of air the vacuum moves, expressed in cubic feet per minute (CFM) or cubic meters per hour (CMH). High airflow creates strong air movement, greatly improving the ability to capture dust and dirt over a larger area. This specification is particularly relevant for electric powerheads, where airflow enhances overall cleaning performance.
Airwatts
Airwatts represent the overall motor performance, combining both water lift and airflow. It’s calculated by the ratio between these two measurements, offering a more complete view of the vacuum’s efficiency. While airwatts are an important figure, they should be considered alongside water lift and airflow for the most accurate measure of performance.
Together, Water Lift (H2O), Airflow (CFM/CMH), and Airwatts determine the total cleaning power of your central vacuum system — ensuring effective suction, faster cleaning, and superior results.
