Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, May 2009 – May is Clean Air Month, and Lone Star Vacuum of Hurst recommends several important steps to improve indoor air quality, including purchasing a vacuum with advanced, Sealed System filtration. According to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average adult breathes more than 3,000 gallons of air every day. Children breathe more air per pound of body weight and are even more susceptible to poor air quality. With these statistics in mind, homeowners should take steps to prevent indoor air pollution and protect their family’s health, as well as the environment.
According to the EPA, poor indoor air quality is one of the top five most urgent environmental risks to public health. “Contaminants such as dust mites, pollen and pet dander can be reduced with a good vacuum cleaner, states Dale Pruitt of Lone Star Vacuum. “But not all vacuums are created equal,” continues Pruitt. “Allergic individuals should select a vacuum, like a Miele, that has superior air filtration with a HEPA filter and Sealed System™ technology. If the vacuum doesn’t properly filter and capture particles, they can escape back into the air. Some of our customers complain they can even ‘taste’ the dust in the air after vacuuming and that’s a sure sign that their vacuum isn’t filtering properly.”
Although many vacuums feature HEPA filtration, there are other factors to consider. With a bagless vacuum, homeowners have to empty the waste container, re-releasing all the dust, dirt and allergens they captured, back into the air they breathe. A vacuum cleaner that uses a dustbag is the better choice, but a Sealed System is key in effectively retaining these allergens from the home environment.
Steps homeowners can take to improve indoor air quality:
1. Replace your vacuum with an allergy-friendly one, like the ones made by Miele. Beyond their HEPA filter and Sealed System, Miele vacuums have a unique HyClean™ dustbag that traps indoor air pollutants and automatically seals when removed so that dust and dirt can’t escape back into the air. With a bagless vacuum cleaner, emptying the container re-releases dust, dirt, allergens back into the air. “Ask your vacuum dealer, when indoor air quality is a concern, we like to recommend the Miele S5 series which received DMT Air Quality Testing Institute’s top rating of excellent air quality,” states Pruitt.
2. Avoid aerosol products such as hairspray, furniture polish, cooking sprays, bathroom cleaners, air fresheners, antiperspirants, insecticides, and hobby craft sprays. When selecting consumer products, consider solids, sticks and gels instead.
3. Read labels to avoid high VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints or varnishes that can evaporate into the atmosphere and create indoor smog.
4. When outdoor air quality levels are poor, try to avoid using anything that burns, such as wood fireplaces, gas logs, gas stoves - and even candles!
5. Try to reduce or quit smoking, especially indoors as it affects the people around you as well as the quality of the air in
the home.
6. Buy Energy Star® appliances that use less electricity and help reduce the poor quality of air outside the home.
7. Remove your shoes before entering the home. That reduces outdoor contaminants such as garden pesticides, dirt and pollen from entering the home in the first place. Consider creating a barrier such as a mudroom where outdoor air and clothing can remain separate from the home. Conversely, one of the reasons indoor air quality can be worse than outdoor air is because homes are so well insulated that VOCs can’t escape. Open a window, run a whole house fan or an air filter to improve airflow and allow contaminants to get out.
